| CTO/ATA/LA provides
young people and those interested in working with
young people the resources and opportunities to
learn, exercise, train, develop, and perform utilizing
Theatre of the Oppressed techniques along with
other forms and practices of liberation theatre.
The Youth Council seeks to identify and form relationships
with theatre companies who have similar interests
with TO and Youth as it applies to theatre training,
rehearsal and performance. The goals are to encourage
the young artist’s sense of voice and expression,
to create an environment and community where creativity
can exist and be nurtured, and to establish and
promote the ownership of ensemble.
CTO/ATA/LA sponsors Y_TOC: Youth
Theatre of the Oppressed Conference.
In April 2002 CTO/ATA/LA, as part
of “Boal in LA,” hosted the first
youth TO conference at the Shakespeare Festival/LA
venue. Augusto Boal conducted a workshop with
students from Le Conte Middle School, Garfield
High School, Birmingham High School, Belmont High
School, and South Gate High School. The workshop
included TO games, scenes from plays presented
by the students and an exploration of how TO can
be applied to scene work. We will continue to
sponsor Y-TOC as well as present performance pieces/plays.
