TREE
Foundation
TREE, or Theatre for Research Education and Empowerment
intends to explore and exploit the potential of theatre
as an effective means of social mobilization. Our corporate
philosophy focuses on “Shaktimoy Manoosh”—a
strong-spirited, self-confident people, aware of and
active in various health and socio-cultural issues to
better their lives. From its very inception in 1999,
TREE has worked on numerous social and health-related
issues including HIV/AIDS, abortion and mother care,
adolescent reproductive health, intolerance, urban care,
pronunciation and perception, drug addiction, violence,
rape and sex abuse, child and female trafficking, poverty,
local government, human rights and so on. The focus
has always been on developing and maintaining cordial
rapport with marginalized and/or target communities;
the intention is to impact on the psychograph of the
target people with our general objective of leaving
the people, not simply educated or aware of, but also
active, and more importantly, empowered enough so that
the people - assert and express themselves, —
comprehend what other people say, — understand
and enjoy their rights and duties, and — continue
any social mobilization activities on themselves even
long after the programs cease to operate.

Cardboard
Citizens
Cardboard Citizens is the UK's only homeless people's
professional theatre company. The company specialises
in making Forum Theatre, but has broadened into the
provision of a range of performance-based cultural actions
with, for and by homeless and ex-homeless people; in
the past three years, this has also included asylum-seekers
and refugees. The company produces three national tours
a year, as well as special projects which are often
site-specific; past productions have included Gorki’s
Lower Depths and Mincemeat, a WW2 epic (see website
for details). From September 2002, the company will
run an cultural activity centre, where homeless and
ex-homeless people will be able to experiment with everything
from samba to film. Many of these projects are delivered
in collaboration: key current collaborators at home
include CRISIS (national charity for homeless people)

West
Sussex Forum Theatre Project
Forum Theatre delivered by young people between the
ages of 11 & 25,with health & social care needs
e.g. care leavers, substance misuse, young offenders,
young carers etc. Commissioned by health & social
care agencies from the voluntary & statutory sector
in West Sussex and Nationally, the aim of this particular
project is to allow young people to voice their views
and opinions, which have a significant impact on the
way services are developed, in both the voluntary and
statutory sector. Through Forum Theatre young people
are able to develop their skills in many ways: - effective
communication, a clearer understanding of health and
social care issues, mediation and the ability to negotiate.
By raising their self-esteem and self-confidence through
appropriate training, young people are able to have
a voice and ensure that their opinions and views are
heard. Some of the young people have been trained by
Adrian Jackson, Cardboard Citizens. Website is still
to be launched!

DOMINO
/ Netzwerk TheaterDialog
During its two years of existence (2002/2003) the project
DOMINO – Zivilcourage im Rampenlicht practiced
and developed emancipatory theatre approaches in Eastern
Germany. DOMINO offered theatre trainings for teachers,
social workers, students and other multipliers. DOMINO
invited theatre practitioners from India, Brazil, Italy,
England, Austria and from the Philippines (among them
Augusto Boal) who presented their approaches in workshops
and conferences. The DOMINO Aktionstheatergruppe performed
in schools, trains and other public places. During the
project two training concepts were developed: TheaterDialog.
Zivilcourage – Becoming protagonist of your own
life and Theatre of Tolerance which combines the antiracist
training concept “Achtung (+) Toleranz”
with emancipatory theatre practice. In January 2004,
Netzwerk TheaterDialog – a network of former DOMINO
practitioners Katharina Lammers, Katrin Wolf and Till
Baumann – was founded and continues training activities
for multipliers and theatre projects with youth.

Interactive
Resource Centre
IRC is an initiative to explore new avenues for community
mobilization and dialogue through interactive theatre
in order to assist people in their struggle to regain
their collective power and strength. The prime aim of
IRC is, therefore, to employ interactive theatre technique
for development and human rights struggle of marginalized
communities in Pakistan. In a period of almost three
years since its inception, the organization has formed
a network of 50 theatre activist groups and performed
in more than 87 districts of Pakistan. IRC theatre activists
are continually learning and developing new interactive
theatre skills. In a field that is just beginning to
define itself, IRC has emerged as the pioneer of non-commercial
interactive theatre in Pakistan. The organization believes
that it has only scratched the surface of what is possible
when audiences are empowered through theatre.

GTO
Coimbra
This group started recently (in the beginning of 2004),
after some members' participation in a workshop with
2 brasilian "curingas". We´re doing
a workshop with the prisional population in a high security
prison in Coimbra; at the same time, we've done some
drama plays, concerning themes like family relationships
or saving the planet's eco-system. Our goal is to work,
using the Theatre of the Opressed tools, with several
lairs of the society, trying to pass on messages in
social areas, like HIV prevention, eco-defense, family
and so on. The group has 8 members and our working area
has been in Coimbra.

Drama
Box
Drama Box is a full-time Mandarin Theatre Company in
Singapore. It has three main scope of work: Main Stage,
Private Rooms, and Cell Projects. In Singapore, Forum
Theatre is not funded by the State Government since
1993. It was not used in public performances since then.
But in 2001, Drama Box started using the technique again
in public performances. Private Rooms is our series
of Community Theatre production which we tour round
Singapore’s housing estate, and performed at open
space. Forum Theatre technique is used in most of these
productions. In December 2002, the Company will be collaborating
with two groups of youth and elderly to explore issues
on inter-generational gap. The project will culminate
to a forum theatre production to tour 7 housing estates
in Singapore. Cell Projects are our initiatives in schools,
which not only includes performances, but also workshops.
Techniques of Cops-In-The Heads, Rainbow Desire, and
Forum Theatre are used. In Oct 2002 to June 2003, Drama
Box initiated a radio forum theatre programme. Aired
on one of Singapore’s most popular Mandarin radio
station over prime time for one hour every weekday,
listeners listened to a short anti-model, and then called
in to forum the piece. Issues touched on include domestic
violence, price hikes, union and workers relationship,
education system, etc.
